What is sciatica?
Sciatica, also called lumbar radiculopathy, is a specific type of pain in the lower back and legs. Sciatica occurs because of pressure on the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body.
Your sciatic nerve originates just under your lower back and splits to move down both legs. The nerve compression usually happens at the beginning of the sciatic nerve but can occur as low as the distal thigh (the bottom part of your thigh bone).
What does sciatica feel like?
Sciatica feels like a shooting or burning pain. It starts in the lower back or thigh and shoots down the leg. While lower back pain and hip pain are common, sciatica pain is generally most intense in the legs.
Some people with sciatica pain also experience leg and back issues such as:
- Pins-and-needles sensation
- Leg weakness
Your sciatica pain may worsen when you cough, sneeze, or move in certain ways.
What causes sciatica?
Sciatica is a symptom rather than a condition. It’s caused by underlying medical conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or bone spurs in the spine. Certain factors can increase your risk of experiencing sciatica pain, including extra weight, pregnancy, poor posture, and frequent heavy lifting.
How is sciatica treated?
At Acupuncture Health Services, Dr. Beys uses evidence-based pain management treatments with thousands of years of history. The central treatment for sciatica is acupuncture, in which Dr. Beys inserts very thin needles into your skin at the specific points of sciatic nerve irritation. The process is painless, and it can offer excellent pain relief.
Acupuncture triggers an immediate healing response in your body, increasing the circulation around the irritated nerve. This bathes your sciatic nerve in oxygen and nutrients that promote healing. Acupuncture also helps to disrupt the nerve-brain pain signaling process and triggers endorphin (feel-good brain chemicals) release.
Along with acupuncture, Dr. Beys offers natural herbal remedies and other body treatments like cupping massage. He further recommends yoga for its tremendous mind and body benefits.
Sciatica can disrupt your whole life, and ignoring it only worsens the pain. Fortunately, you can find long-lasting pain relief through acupuncture and other natural treatments at Acupuncture Health Services. To schedule your appointment, call the office or click on the online booking link now.
