For years, acupuncture has been used to effectively treat several gastrointestinal (GI) problems across the globe. It’s especially effective for people who have not responded or responded poorly to conventional pharmacological methods.
At Acupuncture Health Services in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, Michael Beys, LAc, DACm, and his team understand that living with GI issues can significantly affect your quality of life. This is why we use acupuncture to treat symptoms of GI issues safely.
What gastrointestinal problems can acupuncture help with?
Some of the most common GI issues experienced by people across the globe include diarrhea, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, and inflammatory bowel diseases.
Certain lifestyle factors such as stress, poor diet, and not exercising can bring on these conditions and worsen them too. Living with these conditions can cause significant pain and affect your quality of life.
Unfortunately, for many people with GI issues, traditional medicine and pharmacological methods don’t seem to provide lasting treatment and relief for their symptoms. They increasingly turn to acupuncture to find relief from their symptoms.
How does acupuncture help with gastrointestinal issues?
Acupuncture is currently one of the most common non-pharmacological methods for treating GI issues. Different acupuncture methods are used for this, including warm, fire, electro-acupuncture, and manual acupuncture.
Acupuncture aims to holistically aid your body in restoring balance and optimal functioning. Research shows that acupuncture can effectively treat constipation and diarrhea, two of the most common GI issues experienced by people. There’s also evidence to show that it can help regulate stomach acidity.
What to expect from an acupuncture session?
No two acupuncture sessions are the same. The form of acupuncture you get depends on factors such as age, health status, and wellness needs. When treating you, your acupuncturist will devise a detailed and individualized plan tailored to your needs.
While GI issues affect the abdominal area, your acupuncturist will not necessarily focus solely on acupuncture points in that area.
You’ll be asked to be comfortable during a typical acupuncture session, usually lying down. Your acupuncturist will insert tiny specialized needles into specific points in your skin.
It’s not usual to feel pain during a session. You are, however, likely to feel some tingling, numbness, warmth, or heaviness. If you begin to feel any pain, communicate this with your acupuncturist.
A typical session can last anywhere from 20-45 minutes. However, your acupuncturist will be in the best place to determine the length of your session.
